Safety tips for Sri Lanka
The Foreign Office does not name any specific danger zones or no-go areas for Sri Lanka. A peaceful silence prevails, especially in national parks and natural areas far away from the densely populated tourist centers. To keep the risk of an attack as low as possible, there are a few simple rules of conduct:
- Avoid night-time city tours, especially in dark side streets, poor neighborhoods and questionable areas
- Do not carry valuables openly
- When travelling, carry documents and money on your body under your clothes if you cannot leave them in the hotel safe (e.g. a belt bag from the equipment shop), when visiting churches/monasteries or on cross-country bus journeys
- Keep all documents as copies separate from the original, preferably as a photo upload in an email
Behavioral tips for Sri Lanka
- Appropriate clothing is advised when visiting temples and religious sites.
- Buddhist temples may be entered without shoes and without head covering.
- Taking photographs of military installations, airfields, railway stations, bridges, police stations, etc. is prohibited.
