Tangalle City

Beach holiday and coastal town with Buddhist culture - the touristically interesting port city in the south of Sri Lanka is a meeting point for cultural and beach tourists. East of Tangalle there are several beaches, which become more lonely and natural kilometre by kilometre. But also in Tangalle itself, interesting rock formations provide varied beach impressions.

Attractions on the beach of Tangalle

Hirekitiya Beach :

The beach paradise 15 km to the west has become famous for its teardrop-shaped indentation: white sand and turquoise blue water that sloshes calmly into the surf. The sandy beaches are narrow, because the lush rainforest almost reaches the surf in some places - it doesn't get more tropical than this! Behind it are hidden little houses. However, the beach is neither lonely nor secret and it is considered a top tip among surfers.

Turtle Village :

There is a turtle sanctuary at Rekawa Turtle Beach (10 km to the east). The laid eggs are guarded on the beach, and the small turtles find their way into the sea not far southwest of Tangalle after hatching.

Water sports :

Active athletes can use Tangalle as a base for wreck ping.

Excursions and wildlife observation :

On a catamaran trip through the mangrove systems along the south coast, you can see water birds, reptiles and monkeys.

Culture :

If you are interested in Sri Lankan religion, you must pay a visit to the spectacularly located Buddhist rock temple and monastery of Mulkirigala in the interior on a hill or the colorful temple of Wehwurukannala.
