Nilaveli and Pigeon Island
The beaches of Nilaveli on Sri Lanka's east coast are perfect for those looking for seclusion and relaxation. There is also little hustle and bustle outside the stylish resorts, because the place is rather small and still unknown. Most holidaymakers use Nilaveli for a beach extension after a round trip in the cultural triangle.
Things to do in Nilaveli
To the north of Trincomalee, the wide, bright sandy beaches of Nilaveli stretch along the east coast, where beach tourists can spread out well. Only fishermen and cows can be found here in larger numbers. Boat trips start from Nilaveli to the offshore island of Pigeon Island (approx. 10-15 minutes by boat) with fantastic scenery for snorkelers and pers. Nilaveli itself is not a town, but a Tamil village or a small coastal town with restaurants and bars.
Best time to visit Nilaveli
The best time to visit Nilaveli is from February to September, especially during the European summer months. The temperatures on the east coast during this time are 24 to 33 degrees, the water temperatures are 28 to 31 degrees. The monsoon causes downpours around Nilaveli between October and January. At times of the northeast monsoon, swimming in the sea is not allowed because of dangerous underwater currents and then a Pigeon Island crossing is difficult.
Arrival and transport to Nilaveli
The beach town of Nilaveli can be reached in 20 minutes by bus from the port city of Trincomalee, but most hotels also offer airport shuttles from Trincomalee. The capital Colombo can be reached by car in about six hours.
